The Surface

Resin-Bound Driveways and Heated Driveways in Minnesota

AOne Materials® StonePave is a resin-bound paving system: natural stone aggregate bound in resin and laid as one continuous surface. It behaves differently from a slab because it is permeable — water goes through it rather than off it.

What it is

Stone aggregate is mixed with a resin binder and troweled over a prepared base as a single continuous layer. There are no joints, no individual units and no sand to top up. It is laid with an anti-slip texture that comes from the stone itself, and it is permeable: it lets water drain through to the ground instead of pooling on top.

StonePave is an AOne Materials® product. Stonevale Homes installs StonePave in the Twin Cities.

Where it fits

StonePave earns its place where drainage is the problem, where the shape is awkward, or where a joint-free finish is the point — curves, radiused edges and inlays of a contrasting aggregate are laid rather than cut. For many driveways an air-entrained concrete slab on a compacted base remains the right answer, and we install those too.

The heated option

A snow-melt system can be installed within the build-up beneath the surface. It is specified at the design stage, because heat cannot be added under an existing surface without taking that surface up. Running cost depends on the area, how the system is zoned and how you run it, and we go through that before you commit.

What we are not claiming yet

Resin-bound paving is well established in the United Kingdom, where winters are far milder than ours. Minnesota reaches thirty below and puts a surface through roughly a hundred freeze-thaw cycles a season, which is a materially harder test.

We do not yet have cold-weather documentation from the manufacturer — a rated temperature range, a thermal cycling specification, or a written warranty covering this climate — and until we do, we are not going to tell you how this surface performs over Minnesota winters. When it arrives it will go on this page, whatever it says.

How we price this work

You get a written scope of the work. Where it is well defined we quote a fixed price. Where it genuinely is not — an old structure, an unknown behind a wall — we work cost-plus, and we tell you which model we are using and why before you sign anything. Any change to the scope or the price is written up as a change order and agreed before the work happens.

A resin-bound surface is priced by area and by what the base needs, in that order. Removing an existing surface, the choice of aggregate, edge and inlay work, and a heated system add to it.

Questions we get asked on site visits

What actually is resin-bound paving?
Natural stone aggregate mixed with a resin binder and troweled over a prepared base as one continuous layer. No joints, no individual units, no jointing sand. The texture underfoot comes from the stone itself.
How does it handle a Minnesota winter?
We are not going to tell you yet, and that is deliberate. We do not hold cold-weather documentation from the manufacturer. It has been asked for, and when it arrives it goes on this page whatever it says.
Can it be heated?
Yes. A snow-melt system is installed within the build-up beneath the surface. It has to be specified at design stage — heat cannot be added under an existing surface without taking that surface up.
Can I buy the material for my own project?
Not currently. Stonevale installs StonePave in the Twin Cities, and trade and distributor sales are not open yet.
